Terzo Flower Trails: Where Spring Truly Blooms Spring in Monferrato: Terzo d'Acqui Between Wild Orchids, Medieval Towers and Timeless Flavours
Terzo is home to the Terzo Flower Trails, a network of well-marked hiking routes winding through rolling hills, woodlands and panoramic meadows. The trails vary in length and difficulty, from shorter scenic walks to longer loop routes that open up spectacular views across the valleys.Spring in Monferrato: Terzo d'Acqui Between Wild Orchids, Medieval Towers and Timeless Flavours
What makes this area extraordinary in spring is its botanical richness. The hills around Terzo host more than twenty species of wild orchids, blooming between March and May. Among them, Orchis purpurea stands out with its striking purple tones and sculptural presence.
Together with wild narcissus and other seasonal blossoms, these orchids create a natural mosaic of color along the trails. Walking here in spring becomes a sensory experience — not just a hike, but a slow immersion into light, scent and landscape.
Routes like the Two Valleys Ring and the Galli Trail alternate between open countryside, wooded paths and ridge lines overlooking the Erro and Bormida valleys. Each step reveals something new: a wildflower cluster, a vineyard stretching into the distance, or a quiet stone farmhouse tucked into the hills.

A Landscape Shaped by Time
The geology of Terzo tells a much older story. These hills were formed through millennia of sedimentation and uplift, shaped by layers of limestone, sandstone and ancient marine deposits.
This geological diversity creates varied soils and microclimates — the very reason why orchids flourish here and vineyards thrive. Walking these trails means moving across ancient seabeds turned into fertile hills, reading the Earth’s history beneath your feet.
It’s not just exercise. It’s connection — with land, time and rhythm.
The Medieval Tower of Terzo: A View Across Centuries
One of Terzo’s most iconic landmarks is its medieval tower, the last visible remains of an ancient castle that once guarded the territory between the Erro and Bormida valleys.
Built between the late 14th and early 15th centuries, the tower was part of a defensive system commissioned by the Malaspina family, feudal lords who controlled strategic communication routes across the region.
The structure rises about 25 meters high, with a square plan and over 100 steps leading to the top. Climbing it rewards visitors with sweeping panoramic views: vineyards, villages, rolling hills and, on clear days, the distant ridges of the Ovadese Apennines.
From above, you understand why this location mattered — it dominates the valley, quietly watching over centuries of history.

Aromatic Wines of Monferrato
Monferrato is a land of ancient vineyards and expressive native grape varieties. Wine here is not just a product — it’s cultural identity.
🍷 Brachetto d’Acqui DOCG
A lightly sparkling aromatic red, famous for its intense notes of strawberry and rose petals. Its bright ruby color and gentle sweetness make it ideal as a dessert wine or paired with local pastries. Brachetto has been celebrated since the 19th century and remains one of the area’s most distinctive wines.
🍷 Dolcetto d’Acqui DOC
A dry, medium-bodied red with deep ruby tones and aromas of red berries, black cherry and subtle almond hints. Smooth tannins and balanced acidity make it particularly versatile with traditional Piedmont dishes.
🍷 Barbera del Monferrato
Perhaps Piedmont’s most iconic red wine. Deep ruby with violet reflections, vibrant acidity and notes of ripe dark fruit. Structured yet approachable, it pairs beautifully with the region’s rich and flavorful cuisine.
Wine tastings in local cellars reveal not only flavor profiles, but generations of craftsmanship rooted in soil, climate and patience.

Torrone Canelin: A Sweet Tradition from Visone
Just a few kilometers from Terzo, in the village of Visone, you’ll find one of the area’s most beloved artisanal specialties: Torrone Canelin.
First created in 1948, this traditional white nougat is made with just a few high-quality ingredients: wildflower honey, sugar, egg whites and the prized Tonda Gentile hazelnuts from Piedmont.
The preparation is slow and meticulous. Honey and sugar are cooked gently in copper cauldrons until the texture reaches perfection. Freshly toasted hazelnuts are then folded in, creating a nougat that is fragrant, delicate and perfectly balanced between sweetness and roasted depth.
After a day of walking through blooming hills, tasting Torrone Canelin becomes more than a dessert — it’s a memory. A blend of craftsmanship, tradition and territory in one bite.
