Why should you Come to Piedmont Instead of going to Tuscany, which is so famous?

by Simona Gotta - Monfreedom guide

It’s a fair question. And it deserves an honest answer.

Tuscany is celebrated, photographed, featured in every international travel guide. It’s a reassuring name. You already know what to expect: perfect hills, postcard villages, iconic landscapes.

But the real question is this: do you want a place that has already been told a thousand times, or a territory that can still surprise you?

After more than ten years of spending every weekend guiding groups along the trails of Monferrato, we can say it clearly: those who choose Piedmont do not do it for fashion. They do it for depth.

Piedmont Is Not a Set Design. It Is Layered History.

Monferrato is the largest “castle district” in Piedmont. As you walk among vineyards, medieval towers rise on the horizon. Fortresses and castles crown the hills, telling stories of centuries of alliances, battles and noble families.

These are not isolated monuments. They are part of the landscape.

Every ridge holds a fortress. Every village carries visible traces of its past — not restored for tourists, but lived in, shaped by time.

When we guide a group through these paths, we are not just showing views. We are walking through a living historical geography where medieval architecture meets viticulture, and UNESCO hills are not simply scenery but a real, breathing ecosystem.

Tuscany is harmonious.Monferrato is layered.

And in that layering, there is depth.

Here, the Landscape Breathes.

The hills of Monferrato are not designed to be photographed. They are shaped by generations of work and by the rhythm of the seasons.

Barbera and Grignolino vineyards follow the natural curves of the land. Rows of vines change color as the light shifts. Woodland interrupts the geometry of cultivated slopes. White gravel roads climb gently toward panoramic ridges where silence is not rare — it is normal.

Every weekend we witness the same transformation. People arrive carrying the pace of the city. After a few kilometers, something changes. Shoulders drop. Breathing deepens. Eyes lift toward the horizon.

This territory does not overwhelm you.It restores you.

Gastronomy Here Is Not a Brochure Experience. It Is Rooted Culture.

In Tuscany you find famous labels. In Piedmont you find generations.

In Monferrato, wine is not simply a brand — it is a story passed down. Barbera with character, elegant Grignolino, Moscato that carries the scent of the hills.

Then there is grappa. Distilleries such as Berta represent how a territory can elevate a spirit into culture. It is not just tasting — it is understanding time, patience and craft.

In Mombaruzzo, Moriondo’s amaretti are not “typical sweets.” They are identity. Handmade, fragrant, rooted in tradition.

When we cross these villages with our groups, we are not offering a food stop. We are creating an encounter.

Because You Are Not a Spectator in a Crowd.

In Tuscany, beauty is often shared with hundreds of others.

In Monferrato, you can still stop on a ridge and feel that the view belongs to you. You can walk for miles without meeting large tour groups. You can speak with locals without feeling the distance between “resident” and “visitor.”

That changes everything.

It is not only about fewer people. It is about deeper connection.

Because Choosing Piedmont Is a Conscious Decision.

Choosing Piedmont means choosing an Italy that is less obvious but more authentic.

It means walking through hills that do not perform, but reveal themselves slowly. It means standing before castles that tell real stories. It means sitting in a village square where life flows naturally, not staged for cameras.

After more than ten years of shared steps across Monferrato’s trails, we can say it without hesitation: this is not a choice against Tuscany.

It is a choice for depth.

Tuscany is renowned.Piedmont is rooted.

And if you truly love travel — the kind that leaves something inside you — this may be the Italy you were actually looking for.
